Enchanted iPods and humping unicorns kept me up all night.

Some days I feel as if I have already read all of the “good” PNR / UF series out there. I’ll look for something new and come up with more of the same. This week has been a reprieve from that. I feel as if I hit the preternatural jackpot. I found my way to several new series that were new, fresh, and all around fun reads.

I had stumbled into the synopsis and review of Allison Pang’s debut book A Brush of Darkness (Abby Sinclair #1) and dove in. This book pretty much covered every single type of preternatural creature you could possibly think of. The nice thing is that they were all presented from a new and fun angle. Sure a small cute white unicorn would make a great little addition to a story right? Well, know what would make it even more awesome? If that unicorn was a horny, panty stealing, perv of an animal. This kind of spin was present in all Pang’s characters. She ended weaving a world that completely sucked you in with it’s quirks and mystery.

For all the fun and laughs along the way, this book offers a good dose of mystery and excitement as well. I figured out the “who done it?” pretty early on but what I didn’t figure out was the ‘why?” of it. Another thread sucking you into this book.

Of course, if I was reading this book that means that there also had to be the promise of a nice dose of something smut-tastic. Brush of Darkness offered enough romance and heat to keep me interested in it but without moving the characters involved along too fast. I am getting the feeling that any possible page searing scenes may take a few books to work themselves out. When it is done this well, that is ok with me.

Brava Allison Pang. You saved my night and gave me a new series to be completely enchanted with. (Of course the fact that you also made nods to some of my all time favorite shows may have won some extra brownie points with me as well.) I can’t wait for the second installment of Abby’s journey in A Sliver of Shadow expected in March of 2012.
